Adventist Youth Invited to “Be the Sermon”

By: Andrew Burrows, ATCU

On Sabbath, March 16, 2013, Adventist youth from around the world will not be listening to any sermons in church that morning. Instead, they are being invited to “Be the Sermon” as throughout the Adventist world church, this day is celebrated as Global Youth Day.
The theme for the day, “One in Compassion,” is grounded in the concluding words of Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:25-27). Therefore, it is estimated that eight million Adventist youth will be mobilized on the streets and in the towns, villages, cities, and islands around the world to be the hands and feet of Jesus through acts of kindness.

According to the youth ministries department of the Adventist world church, the objectives of Global Youth Day are to:

a. Recapture the reality of the Seventh-day Adventist youth as a global movement
b. Lead our youth to rediscover the sense of belonging to a global army
c. Reposition “mission” at the heart of youth ministry

In the Atlantic Caribbean Union (ATCU), the youth department has already made plans to make this a significant event in the lives of the young people within the fields of ATCU. Some of the projects planned for that day include visiting the orphanages and homeless while sharing essential care packages, giving blood, using the social media to share words of kindness, sharing thank-you baskets with the police and fire departments, and more.

In some of the fields, Global Youth Day will also commence a week of spiritual revival led by youth lay speakers.
It is anticipated that Global Youth Day will become an annual event with a different emphasis each year.
