ATCU Attends IAD’s Year-end Meetings

ATCU Attends IAD’s Year-end Meetings Communication Department, ATCU

Dr. Leonard Johnson, president of the Atlantic Caribbean Union (ATCU), along with Pastor Peter Kerr, executive secretary of ATCU, and Elder Roderick Sands, ATCU treasurer, attended the annual year-end meetings of the Inter-American Division (IAD) in Tuxtla, South Mexico during October 23-29, 2013.
During this year’s meetings, two of the local mission fields, which gained conference status, held their inauguration services conducted by Pastor Israel Leito, president of the IAD. Additionally, the new three-million-dollar Chiapas Union headquarters was dedicated. In attendance was Pastor Mike Ryan, one of the vice-presidents of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Items discussed in the business sessions included policy amendments, an update on the theology of ordination, and amendments to the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Dr. Johnson noted that the church was not changing the fundamental beliefs, but was adjusting the language in order to reflect more sensitivity towards both males and females. Another area given attention, according to Dr. Johnson, was the Biblical account of creation, with the church underscoring in a stronger sense its support of the Biblical account of creation. Growth in the church’s membership and Biblical stewardship were also discussed, and the 22 unions of the IAD, including ATCU, presented video reports of events, plans, and programs of their respective territories within the last year.
One other event that took place was Dr. Johnson accepting an award on behalf of ATCU for hosting the students of Montemorelos University as a part of the 100 Students Church Planting Movement which was held during July 2013 in Nassau, Bahamas. Out of this initiative, a new Spanish company was formed in the South Bahamas Conference. Also, Dr. Johnson served on the Compensation Review Committee.
Now that the IAD’s year-end meetings are concluded, the Atlantic Caribbean Union will conduct its year-end meetings during November 7-12, 2013, in Nassau, Bahamas.
