ATCU Educational Leaders Attend IAD Principals’ Council

Led by union education director, Dr. Cheryl Rolle, a group of seven principals and directors from the Atlantic Caribbean Union (ATCU) joined more than one hundred other principals and directors from the four English-speaking unions of the Inter-American Division (IAD) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad to participate in the Division’s first principals’ council.
Held under the theme “Renewed for Service” and organized by the education department of the IAD, the weekend event took place at the University of the Southern Caribbean during April 12-14, 2013, and focused on the spiritual renewal and professional development of the attendees.

At the several worship sessions, participants received spiritual food from Dr. Gamaliel Florez, IAD education director; Dr. Balvin Braham, IAD vice president; and Dr. Clinton Valley, president of the University of the Southern Caribbean. Drs. Florez and Braham were also presenters.

Seminar topics on Sunday included “The Principal as an Educational Leader in Management and Supervision” by Dr. Eugene Brewer, educational development specialist for the Southern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists; The Principal's Role in Effecting Change through Curriculum Development" by Dr. Cheryl Rolle, education director of the ATCU; Teacher-Centered Evaluation by Dr. Faye Patterson, associate education director of IAD.

The highlight of the weekend was the commissioning of thirteen principals and directors on Sabbath afternoon. Among those being commissioned from ATCU were Mrs. Joan Scavella, education director of the South Bahamas Conference; Mr. Anthony Burrows, principal of Bahamas Academy in the South Bahamas Conference; and Ms. Annette Alleyne, principal of Cayman Academy in the Cayman Islands Conference.

Other unions attending the event were the Belize Union of Churches, the Caribbean Union, and the Jamaica Union.
