Atlantic Caribbean Union to Participate in “Mission to the Cities’’

By: Communication Department, ATCU

“For the first time in history, more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in cities,” said Mark Finley, one of the assistants to the president of the General Conference. “About 70,000 people every day move from rural areas into cities.” He was speaking during the opening session of the Spring Council Meeting – one of two annual meetings of the global Executive Committee- held on April 17, 2012 at the headquarters of the world church in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States. Recognizing this trend, the General Conference of Seventh - day Adventists has launched an initiative called “Mission to the Cites.” According to Ted N. C. Wilson, the president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, “Mission to the Cities” is “not just an event, its God’s comprehensive plan for reaching big cities.”
New York City has been chosen as the first city where the Seventh-day Adventist Church plans to hold evangelistic meetings over the next several years, most appropriately chosen because according to the website at www.NY13.org, New York is an urban center whose population reflects a microcosm of the world. An estimated 19 million people who speak some 800 languages live in metropolitan New York. NY 13 is the acronym for New York 2013.

During March 2013, Pastor Al Powell, personal ministries director of the Atlantic Caribbean Union (ATCU), attended a training session in New York to organize and plan for the mega evangelistic outreach that will be conducted during July 2013 in New York City.

In speaking of his experience, Pastor Powell stated, “I am privileged to be included in this important aspect of the church’s mission.” He further explained that while New York City will be the focal point of the North American Division during this evangelistic thrust, leaders of the remaining 12 divisions of the Adventist world church also have identified a major city in their divisions where a major evangelistic thrust will be conducted. For the Inter-American Division, the major city identified is Bogotá in Columbia.

Pastor Al Powell, along with Pastor Wilson Isnord of the Turks and Caicos Islands Mission, will represent ATCU once again at this mega evangelistic effort to be conducted in Bogotá, Colombia from April 26 to May 05, 2013.
Church leaders at every level of the Adventist world church organization have identified 630 major cities worldwide to focus their evangelistic energies and resources on during the next three years.
