Shannon Butler, a 12th grade student and Deputy Head Boy at his high school received the award for Best Overall Performance in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas in the 2012 B.G.C.S.E. examinations at the Ministry of Education Awards Ceremony held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Church of God Auditorium, Joe Farrington Road. Shannon earned 9As and 1B while in the 11th grade.
Shannon also received the award for Best Overall Performance in Independent Schools, Best Overall Performance in New Providence, and Best Performance for Mathematics. By all indications, Shannon made history as the first high school student to receive all four of the aforementioned awards.

In highlighting the significance of this accomplishment, the Nassau Guardian, in its January 23, 2013 edition, described him as “a young man worth heralding.” Also, in an interview with the Nassau Guardian, Shannon stated that “there are a lot of us doing positive things and it is good to show that there are males who are still interested in doing well and doing respectable and decent things with our lives. Shannon further expressed that “For myself I would hope to go off to university and do well so that I would be able to get into medical school and become the surgeon that I want to be and bring those skills back to the Bahamas so that I can give back to my country”

Recently, in preparation for attending university, Shannon along with a number of students took the SAT examination (Scholastic Assessment Test). As a testament of his and religious convictions, Shannon requested to sit the exam on a Sunday as opposed to a Saturday. He stated after the exams, that with the help of God, he believes he did well.

Shannon is the son of Peter & Wendy Butler and grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Wendell Albury and Dutchess Rolle and Danny Tynes. He is a member of the Grants Town Seventh-day Adventist Church, in the South Bahamas Conference.

For his parents, they say “To God Be the Glory, Great Things He Has Done!!”
