On August 22, members across the Atlantic Caribbean Union (ATCU) will join the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church in observing enditnow Emphasis Day, raising a united voice against violence and abuse and affirming the dignity, safety and worth of every person. Under the theme, “Moved with Compassion,” members are being challenged not only to recognize those who are hurting, but also to listen, respond and take meaningful action.
A Global Initiative with a Local Impact
EndItNow is a global initiative of the Seventh-day Adventist Church dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action to end violence and abuse in all its forms. Since its launch in 2009, the movement has encouraged Adventists around the world to speak openly about violence, educate their communities and stand alongside those who have been affected.
For ATCU, the August 22 emphasis provides an opportunity to translate that global commitment into a regional witness, with each of its four conferences responding to the realities of its own community.
“EndItNow is significant for the Atlantic Caribbean Union because it gives us an opportunity to turn compassion into action,” said Arleen Sands, ATCU women’s ministries director. “Our four fields are not simply participating in a global initiative. We are declaring that violence and abuse have no place in our homes, our churches or our communities. To be moved with compassion means that we see those who are hurting, we listen to those who are often unheard, we protect our children, we support survivors, and we become part of the solution. Every field has a role to play, and together our voices can become one powerful voice saying: EndItNow.”
Four Fields, One Compassionate Response
The four conferences of ATCU are preparing activities that will give a public expression to the theme. While the approaches will differ according to the needs of each territory, the events provide opportunities for Adventists to engage their communities and draw attention to the impact of violence and abuse.
South Bahamas Conference
The South Bahamas Conference Women’s Ministries Department will lead an EndItNow march moving from Windsor Park through East Street and ending at Rawson Square with a rally at 5:00 p.m.
The march will give churches an opportunity to carry the enditnow message into the community through placards and public witness, highlighting the need for individuals and communities to take a stand against violence and abuse.
Turks and Caicos Islands Conference
The Turks and Caicos Islands Conference Women’s Ministries Department will host a Joint EndItNow Rally at 4:30 p.m. at the Kew Town Farmers Market.
The public gathering will provide an opportunity for members to engage the wider community and affirm that every person deserves to live free from violence, abuse, intimidation and fear.
North Bahamas Conference
The North Bahamas Conference will participate with a rally that will place special emphasis on children who need our care, compassion and support.
The focus recognizes the particular vulnerability of children and the responsibility of adults, families, churches and communities to create environments in which children are safe, heard, protected and valued. The initiative will encourage greater awareness of the needs of children and the role adults must play in safeguarding their wellbeing.
Cayman Islands Conference
The Cayman Islands Conference will also participate in the regional enditnow emphasis through its own march and rally activities at the Agricultural Society Pavilion, Lower Valley at 3:30 pm. Its participation adds another voice to the regional initiative and reinforces the importance of addressing violence and abuse across the diverse communities that make up ATCU.
Together, the four fields demonstrate that while the circumstances may differ from one territory to another, the responsibility to confront violence and promote healthier families and communities is shared.
Moving From Compassion to Action
“Moved with Compassion” calls the Church to consider what happens after we become aware that someone is hurting. Compassion begins with seeing and listening, but it finds its fullest expression in how we respond. Within our churches and communities are people who may be carrying pain silently, children who need adults willing to protect them, families facing difficult circumstances and survivors who need to know that they will be heard and supported.
The emphasis therefore provides an opportunity for congregations to examine their own readiness to respond and be willing to speak when silence could allow violence to continue. The events create visibility and conversation, but the greater goal is to encourage churches and individuals to become more intentional about prevention, protection, support and healing.
Compassion That Continues Beyond August 22
The true impact of EndItNow will not be measured only by the number of people who participate in a march or attend a rally. Its lasting value will be seen in what happens afterward, in churches that become more intentional about creating safe environments, in families that learn to recognize and address unhealthy patterns, and in communities that become more willing to speak up for those who are vulnerable.
For ATCU, August 22 represents an important opportunity to connect a global church initiative with local action. Each field is bringing its own emphasis to the day, but together they are demonstrating that compassion must move beyond words and become a practical response to the needs of people.
The call is clear: be moved by compassion, and act.
